Must have: winter tyres
The 10 most made mistakes with winter tyres.
- To expensive (winter tyres cost the same than summer tyres, often even less)
- It doesn’t snow – I don’t need winter tyres (it is not only the snow – it’s the temperatures. If the temperature sinks below 7°C your summer tyres aren’t safe anymore)
- New summer tyres are safe! (summer tyres are not make for winter conditions – winter tyres have a better grip due to special material which make winter-journeys safer)
- You can’t drive as fast with winter tyres. (You are allowed to drive the same speed – doesn’t matter if summer or winter tyres. But of course you should adjust your speed with the weather)
- My car has ABS and ESP (the best high-tech equippment fails if your tyres are not adjusted to the road conditions)
- I haven’t got enough space for winter tyres (… but your car- or tyre-dealer will have. Most dealers offer the possibility to store your tyres)
- Winter tyres don’t look attractive (that’s not true anymore)
- Roads will be cleared and salted (even if organisation is top the snow-clearance can’t be everywhere and some roads don’t have a 24 hour clearance service)
- I am insured! ( not if you use summer tyres! The accident risk is much higher!)
- It’s not worth it for a few days ( all together – rain, frost, snow, etc. gives 185 days per year for winter tyres)
